East Penn’s safe, state-of-the-art lead-acid battery recycling facility processes about 30,000 used lead-acid batteries per day. Their closed-loop, automated system recycles virtually 100 per cent of each spent battery, including lead, plastic, steel, and acid.
At East Penn’s recycling facility, the batteries are collected, dismantled and separated. The lead is smelted, then refined. Sulphur fumes created during the lead smelting are trapped and processed into a liquid fertiliser solution. More than 24,000 tons of this solution is shipped to fertilizer manufacturers each year.
The plastic jars, cases and covers are cleaned and ground into polypropylene pellets that are moulded into new cases and parts at the company’s on-site injection moulding facility. East Penn recycles more than 5.4 million kilograms or 11.8 million US pounds of plastic per year.
East Penn’s acid reclamation plant recycles approximately 23 million liters or 6 million US gallons of acid per year, diverting this material from potentially hazardous disposal and conserving ground water use. That amount could fill about nine Olympic-size swimming pools.
